How to paint a steel verandah?

IMG_2975.jpeg

Looking for some advice on how to paint this steel Verandah frame. I can’t see any rusting anywhere and considering just replacing the roofing instead of painting as they’re quite old. If I was to paint the roofing would it be the same process as painting the frames?

thank you!

Re: How to paint a steel verandah?

Hello @sdeakin

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about painting your steel verandah.

Your steel frame appears to be in good condition and as you mentioned has no rust spots on it. If you are planning on painting its surface, I suggest sanding it down with a 180grit sandpaper. Once the entire framework has been sanded I suggest wiping and washing the surface clean of sanding dust. Once the surface is nice and dry, I recommend using Dulux 1L Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Gloss Paint Vivid White it's designed for use on metal surfaces and does not require additional priming.

For your Colorbond roofing sheets, I suggest having a look at this discussion - How to paint a Colorbond fence? by @Oshah. The process used is applicable to the underside of your roofing set. The general process is to clean and key the surface of the Colorbond sheet so that the primer can anchor properly to the surface of the metal sheet. If the surface is still shiny and clean I propose using a 600grit sandpaper to prepare the surface. Please make sure to wash the surface clean with water. Once the surface is dry you can then apply the White Knight Rust Guard system as explained in the discussion mentioned.

Here are are some handy step-by-step guides:

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when working on your project.
