We recently had our ducting replaced with a split system. Now the ducting is useless as the gas is capped off and the pcb is removed it doesnt even function as a fan. So we would like to remove the external unit to possibly sell it and close of the ducting. The ducting itself is pretty bad because we can feel the cold air from outside flowing in sometimes.
now if we remove the ducting there is obviously the issue of a hole on the exterior wall. How can we go about patching this ? The internal wall i can obviously patch up with dry wall and mud. But would like to remove the unit. So please suggest the best way to patch and weather proof the exterior wall
Hello @JimJose
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about rendering your external wall.
It is difficult to tell what is behind the housing of your ducting. Generally speaking, if the wall is made of masonry, I would advise covering the hole with masonry blocks and filling the gaps with mortar. Once the mortar cures and the wall is secure you can then render its surface. If its a brick wall the same method can be applied. However, if there is still a motor inside that housing, I suggest asking your installer back and having them safely remove the housing and motor. They will be able to remove it safely and make the power cables going to that appliance safe and secure.
If you've not done any masonry repairs or rendering before, I suggest engaging the services of a professional to properly close off the hole on your exterior wall.
Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

Good Morning @JimJose
Its a bit hard to determin what sized hole you have behind the unit
I would wait until you have the unit removed and then assess.A temporay patch could be some plywood and then either go the route of a masonary repair or a more weatherproof patch that will last. Depending on how visually seen it is from any angle would be the way I would repair it.
The edge around the box probarlly wont be the edge of the hole in the wall. But it also gives you a point you can secure a temporary patch to once the unit is removed.
