Hi
We have 3 existing outdoor posts that I am looking to refurb. This is first time doing something like this and looking for the best steps to get this looking better. My plan is to sand, clean, apply wood filler and paint.
Not sure if this is the correct steps or what sort of sanding grit I should use, I have Ryobi orbital sander that I can use, and what can be done around the top and bottom joints. Maybe sealant around the top. Can I just paint over the bottom support, seems good condition?
Thanks, any products that you can recommend or steps will be appreciated.
Hello @Dray1
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about painting your posts.
I suggest doing a quick paint test with a clean rag and methylated spirits. Put some metho on a corner of the clean rag and rub the surface of the post. If the paint comes off, it is a water-based paint. But if the surface only cleans up and becomes shiny, it is oil based. Once you know what base was used for the paint, I suggest using the same one for compatibility.
I recommend using Parfix 500g Ready To Use Multipurpose Filler to fill all the holes and knots in the timber. Once the filler cures, I suggest sanding the surface of the post. It does not have to be back to timber, but the entire surface must be sanded thoroughly. Wipe the surface of the post with a damp cloth to remove all the sanding dust. Allow the post to totally dry off. I recommend using either Taubmans 4L White Low Sheen Sunproof Exterior Paint or Taubmans 4L White Low Sheen Sunproof Exterior Paint. But if it is oil-based I recommend using the same brands and looking at the oil-based set.
