I am in the process of cleaning and restaining my 'black mold' infested merbau (I think) front deck. First I scrubbed it with hot soapy water and rinsed it with a high pressure washer. No change. I then scrubbed it with Cabots deck clean, twice, and after letting it sit for 20mins I rinsed it, after each application with my high pressure cleaner. No change at all. The black mold is still there. Is there anything else I can still do, or do I just go ahead and stain it with my Cabots Aqua deck? Or would it be better to use some sort of paint? I'm worn out by scrubbing it over and over. BTW, would sanding it help at all?
Any idea would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
Hi @ChrisNoor
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your deck.
If after intensive cleaning and the mould still refuses to budge, the next stage I would recommend is to sand the surface of the deck back to wood. Bringing the surface of the deck back to wood will guarantee that the next stain or sealer you place over it will be properly absorbed.
Here are some handy step-by-step guides:

Thank you Eric for your advice. Today I started doing a small test piece with my small sander and it seemed to go OK. Tomorrow I need to go and hire a belt sander to do the rest of the deck. Do Bunnings hire out sanders?
Hello @ChrisNoor
Yes, you can hire the For Hire: Orbital Floor Sander - 4hr to sand the surface of your deck. My best advice is to make sure that all your screws or nails are re-imbedded to make sure that it does snag onto the sanding disc.

Thank you Eric. I'll post a picture when its finished
Hi @ChrisNoor
Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing your deck ready for oiling.
Eric
Nearly finished. A little bit more on Monday, then oiling. It's a lot of hard work, but we're getting there.
Finally, after having some rain for two days on end, I got to oiling it
today. Two coats.
Its OK, but I can still see quite a few mold spots. Oh well. Looks like it may need to be done again next year.
Heaps better than it was though.
I think it's come up great @ChrisNoor. The main portion of it looks fantastic. There's a bit of residual previous coating around the wall and pillar that you could sand back next year, though I understand it's quite hard work.
I think you've done a marvellous job.
