How to repair cracks on concrete apron?

Hi Team,

Could you please advise on the best way (putty fillers or sealers?) to repair the cracks in my concrete apron? I’m planning to seal/paint the surface after the repairs—though that may happen at a later date—so I want to ensure the cracks are properly addressed beforehand.

I appreciate your guidance and any recommendations you can provide.

The faded dark gray color on the concrete is from the old sealant.1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg

Re: Cracks on concrete apron

Hello @LuckyMax

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your concrete apron.

This is a popular topic in the community and there have been quite a few discissions in regards to how to fix cracks in your concrete driveway. The general consensus is to use either Gripset Betta 1L Concrete Crack Filler or Earl's 4kg Concremate Expanding Cement. However, if you are painting the surface at a later date, it would be better to use the expanding cement as it dries to a hard finish. The best advice for this repair is to clean the cracks as best as possible and removing any debris that may be stuck in it before applying the filler.

Hi EricL,

Thanks for your response. I was wondering—does Concremate work well for fine cracks too? Also, is it water-resistant?

Re: Cracks on concrete apron

Hello @LuckyMax

For the fine cracks you'll need to use a plastic paint scraper to spread the Concremate evenly. Once the Concremate fully cures it is water resistant.

Hi EricL,

In your expert opinion, would you recommend using a liquid sealant with a caulking gun over Concremate for treating fine cracks?

Re: Cracks on concrete apron

Hi @LuckyMax

Because you are planning on sealing and painting the surface of your concrete apron the repair material must dry hard and not soft or flexible. Painting or sealing over a flexible surface will be a weak point in the seal. It will flex and peel off, so it is best to have a hard surface repair so that there will be no weak points on the surface.
