Re: i want to creat a letterbox

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Janettetucker. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a letterbox.

Using leftover stone tiles and blueboard is a great way to recycle materials and create something unique. To get started, you’ll need to build a substructure first that will support the cladding and tiles. This could be made from exterior H3-treated pine if you want a timber frame, or concrete blocks if you prefer something more solid.

Once the substructure is in place, you can clad it with the blueboard and then tile over it with your leftover stone tiles. The key thing is to make sure the structure is strong enough to hold the tiles and also has an opening that fits the letterbox snugly. It’s a good idea to take measurements of your letterbox first and sketch a design for the substructure, including the exact position and size of the opening, so everything fits together nicely.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: i want to creat a letterbox

Hi @Janettetucker,

I suggest you start at the top so let's focus on that because I think it will require a team effort.

The size of the top will be determined by the external size of the pillar letterbox plus overlap.

Google AI:

The average external size of a pillar letterbox in Australia is approximately 900mm to 1100mm in height, 350mm to 400mm in width, and 250mm to 350mm in depth.
These dimensions are designed to accommodate A4 mail comfortably, with common, popular models often falling into these specific ranges:
  • Height: Generally ranges from 890mm to 1130mm (excluding additional decorative toppers or wedges).
  • Width: Commonly 350mm to 468mm.
  • Depth: Usually 250mm to 300mm, with some parcel-specific models extending up to 468mm.
Key Considerations
  • Australia Post Compliance: The letterbox slot should be between 900mm and 1200mm from the ground.
  • Internal Capacity: For functionality, the interior should be at least 330mm deep to allow A4 envelopes to lie flat.
  • Material Types: Popular options include glass-reinforced concrete (GRC), aluminum, and galvanised steel.
  • Parcel Options: Pillar letterboxes designed for parcels (parcel boxes) are typically larger, with widths often around 460mm and depths similar to their width.

We need to decide external size and I suggest 1M height.

Now we need to look for a letterbox top, what material and will a standard size fit the top with overlap or does it need to be cut to size.

That one looks nice and a colour match.
