One of the cats came limping into the kitchen from the dining area!
My wife picked her up and I went in there and discovered something like 20 dead bees on the floor and maybe another ten live ones on the curtain. First this is 'make safe' so I closed the lounge and dining sliding doors and we attended to the cat in the usual way for a bee sting and she made a good recovery walking normally after a couple of hours and later on back to zoomies with the other cat - phew. Went back into the war zone and vacuumed the live ones off the curtain and then the dead ones off the floor... and then more live ones off the aircon vents!
Taped off all the vents and noticed the aircon was set for Recirculate?
Went out the next morning to investigate and the bees were buzzing around using the brick mortar joints to exit and enter.
Setup outdoor wi-fi camera to monitor the area.
I had to mount the camera upside down and use the Flip image option in the camera app.
To get the height I used a microphone stand (I do music) with a length of pine timber.
[ YouTube video here showing bee activity]
Tried several times to upload a public video clip and got this error.
(Will try again later)
Do we have a hive in the cavity and did some of those bees get lost lost and came through the aircon... something not right?
Back inside if there is already a hive most likely it's too the right of the PowerPoint between bottom of window and floor.
I did the usual thing and felt along there for hot spots and there was none... hmm.
Then I remembered the vapour barrier wall wrap.
Unlikely bees would make hive on that... hmm.
I monitored the bee area and for the next two days, we had rain and no sight of them.
Bees stay home when it's raining, they say large drops can even kill them.
Weather cleared and still no sign of them?
Decided to have a look inside the cavity using this camera taped to wire.
Removed the GPO (powerpoint) to gain access - Nothing?
Rang a mate who used to do the bee thing and most likely they were scout bees looking for a new location.
I added two things to the job list:
Make shade mesh box to cover aircon.
Silicone the mortar joints along that side of the house.
(Maybe that's not a good idea?)
Anyway... I posted this because others here may find it interesting and may even be useful.
Cheers
Hi @AlanM52,
Hopefully, for you and your furry friend's sakes, it was an isolated issue.
Sounds like the air con cover and sealing up the mortar joints would be a good way to keep things out, assuming that is where the bees got in.
Good luck!
Jacob
