The kids have put a hole in the plaster wall. It’s about 20cm in diameter. I’m not much of a DIY expert but thought I’d have a go at repairing it. Any tips? Will just a filler work or do I need some board?

Get the kids to fix it!
I'm with @Shane. When we were younger, my brother threw a Playstation controller through the wall after a heated game of FIFA. Dad made him fix it.
That hole was small enough to use a simple filler though. 20cm is quite large and it sounds like you may need to patch it and then use a filler too. Gyprock actually make a kit that sounds perfect for your situation, check it out here. There is even step-by-step instructions on that page and a link so you can see where to buy it.
