hi all. I’m trying to colour match a meranti veneer door from the 1970s/80s. Seems to have been in wide use and is a golden honey colour. If you know it, do you have any advice on a product to that may suit? Cheers, Steven
Hi @Quoll,
Can you advise specifically what you are trying to find?
Is it a stain to match this colour?
Or are you looking for a door with a similar coloured veneer?
If it is a stain, you are looking for, then it can be a bit difficult because the colour you achieve will be relative to the timber the stain is applied to. Your best bet would be to use Cabot's Step-by-Step Colour Guide and select a colour that is relatively close.
If you are looking for a door with a similar coloured veneer, can you advise whether it is an internal or external door and the size? I will have to get in touch with our suppliers when they reopen on Monday to see if they have anything similar.
Let me know what you think.

Hi Jacob. I have two doors that both need touching up. I’d like to keep the same colour and do am lookjj in ng for a tinted varnish. I’m aware of the colour charts, and also that it depends on the wood it’s applied to. I asked the question in case someone has colour matched a 70s meranti door with a tinted varnish. These doors were not uncommon and so am trying my luck.
Hi @Quoll,
Allow me to tag some of our experienced members to see if they've had any dealings with this kind of door - @Nailbag, @Dave-1, @TedBear, @Jewelleryrescue.

Good morning @Quoll
@JacobZ has already mentioned the same thoughts I had.
Is there a chance of a better photo to show what you mean by touch up? I think it will be hard to touch up smallish areas and it may be worth while considering to sand back and redo depending on how small the area is.
I remember those styled doors and how consistant the colouring was, a patch I think would be hard to feather in.
Dave
Thanks Dave. I also suspect it will be difficult. I’ve decided to sand back the door and will colour match to other doors using the relevant colour chart.
Hi @Quoll
There is a potential chance that by simply applying with a clean rag a best match lightly in the worn areas followed by a full door clear coat that the patches may blend in to a very acceptable level. I had a similar issue with my folks Parker furniture arms, which came up pretty good in the end. You will need to use an oil base to match what they used in the 70's.
Nailbag
Thanks Nailbag. I'll carefully and delicately give that a go.
