How to fix window friction?

Hi everyone,

We have about 3 windows (bedroom, kitchen and bathroom) that have lost all the "friction" in the window stays (e.g. when you open the window - it just flings right open).  Can these be "adjusted" or do I need to get them replaced? (I can't find an allen key to fit the circle hinge spots - but not sure if they are adjustable in any case).

Re: Window friction stays - repair or replace?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Maata77. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about windows.

It sounds like your windows use friction stays that rely on either tensioned arms or a built-in spring mechanism to hold the window open. When a window flings open, it usually means that the friction or spring has worn out, lost tension, or broken. Some friction stays do have adjustment screws, often small nuts or screws at the pivot points or the top bracket, but not all brands make them adjustable, and some require a specific tool, sometimes an Allen key of a particular size.

Since these are proprietary windows, the safest way to know if an adjustment is possible is to check for any manufacturer markings or model numbers on the stays themselves or on the window frame. If you can identify the manufacturer, they can usually provide a diagram or instructions on whether the friction can be tightened or if replacement is the only option.

In most cases, if the window flings open with force and there’s no obvious adjustment, it’s likely that the stays are worn out and will need replacing. While you investigate, handle the windows carefully because the sudden movement can cause damage or injury. It might be worth checking out the top of the window, where the small arm is mounted. There appear to be two fixings, one of which might be an adjuster.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Hi @MaataNZ,

Try that or buy a can of Belt Grip from Supercheap Auto.

For some of us old blokes Belt Grip go's back to the late sixties.

Cheers

Re: Window friction stays - repair or replace?

Thanks @MitchellMc , I will have a look at the window for markings as I can’t see a separate adjustment screw/similar.

Re: How to fix window friction?

Thanks @AlanM52, I’ll check out Bunnings (I’m in NZ, so fingers crossed if they don’t have this they have something similar).
