Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your entrance door lever set.
You've done very well with the assembly; I suspect that the axle pin just missed its mark and did not slot into the thumb knob. I propose taking it apart and assembling the door knob in front of you so that you can see how the locking pin slides into the thumb knob. I propose trying again, but I recommend taking your time to make sure that everything lines up. My best advice is to test the thumb knob locks in place before putting the screws on.
