How to pack out plasterboard with timber frame?

How to pack out plasterboard with timber frame?

We have a walk through gap/passage way which we want to fill in. Size 2060 high x 1490 wide.

There is a plasterboard wall either side which is 125mm deep/thick.

I'm going to use 10mm Gyprock plasterboard on both sides, flush with the original on both sides.

If I use 90mm framing timber for the header/footer boards, studs and noggin, how do I pack out the extra space so that the new plasterboard is flush with the original? Are there specific packing strips that you put onto the frame before applying the stud adhesive? I couldn't find anything suitable on the Bunnings website. Thank-you.

Re: Internal Timber Frame - Plasterboard Packing

Hi @cxkent,

If you are using 90mm framing with 10mm plasterboard on each side, you'd have 110mm of thickness, meaning you'll need to make up 15mm.

Typically, masonite is used to pack out studs because it is non-compressible, easy to cut by scoring and snapping it with a utility knife, and it comes in sheets that are large enough to cover the full height of the studs easily.

You could grab some 5mm masonite and stack 3 layers on top of each other, then fix them to the studs using some plasterboard screws. You would then just sheet over the top as normal.

Alternatively, you could use one layer of masonite and then double up the plasterboard on one side of the frame. This might be an idea if sound transfer is something you are taking into account, as an extra sheet of plasterboard will help to dampen sound.

Let me know what you think and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
