How to paint plastic panels?

Hello,

I’ve recently bought my first home and the previous owner has installed some (low quality) panelling in the living and kitchen area. It’s made to look like wood from afar but close up the texture appears to be more of a textured plastic. I’d like to paint the panels a darker brown mimicking a walnut wood if possible and would appreciate any idea on how we can pull this off without sanding away the “wood” texture.
(From what I can tell the panels have been installed with a glue of some kind, not screwed into the wall so removing them could become a whole other issue.)

Re: How to paint plastic panels?

Hello @nichols49

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about how to paint plastic.

I propose wiping down the surface of the plastic panelling with Selleys Sugar Soap Wall Cleaning Wipes - 25 Pack. I recommend using Dulux 1L PRECISION White Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer. I propose testing a small spot first to confirm compatibility. Once the primer has cured, place your finger on top of the primer and try to slide it off. If it slides off easily, the primer is not compatible. But if the primer is stuck and refuses to budge then it is compatible with the surface. You can use any standard water-based wall paint over the primer.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
