Hi
we sanded our. Front wood door as it was fading.
we are not sure what to do next or what to apply.
do we just restain the door or is there another type of coat that goes over it?
Hi @marlzyc,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
You've done a good job with the sanding so far, but you're going to have to do a bit more if you want to get a great result. You can see in a few sections, like those I've shown below, that there is still a coating, possibly varnish, on the door. If you were to apply any product over the top of this, you would get a really blotchy finish that wouldn't look great.

To get the best results possible, you should take the door off the hinges. You can then use some painter's tape and masking paper to protect the glass. Once the glass is covered, use a random orbital sander with some 80-grit sandpaper to remove all of the coating. Once the coating has been removed, use some 180-grit sandpaper to smooth and prepare the surface for coating.
This will give you a nice, smooth surface to apply your coating to.
You can then apply an exterior grade clear varnish such as this Cabot's Cabothane Clear Polyurethane Timber Varnish, or a stain and varnish such as Cabot's Exterior Varnish Stain, which can be tinted to a variety of colours.
You could also apply an oil such as this Intergrain Clear Universal Timber Oil which would protect the timber nicely, but it would need to be reapplied every year or so.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Does that look like a satin or Matt finish? This is the inside of the door. What product do you think was applied?
Hi @marlzyc,
It would be impossible to say with certainty what specific product was applied, but we can take an educated guess.
Can I ask for a photo of the door with a light shining on it? Seeing the shine will help me work out what type of coating was used. It looks more like satin than matte to me, but this photo will help me be sure.
If you run your hand over the door, can you feel the timber grain, or does it feel like a solid film is covering the door?
Let me know what you find.

can you use silkkens brand. Do they have a clear option? Or a clear that you can add a slight tint to?
Hi @marlzyc,
Yes, you could use Sikkens brand, but they do not make varnishes; they make tinted oils.
The Sikkens Cetol Premium Timber Oil Natural and Sikkens Natural Cetol Deck Ultra Stain would both work.
Have a look at Colours - Sikkens, where you can see the full variety of colour options.
Let me know what you think.
