Hi i would like to know how to repair a few small dents in hollow veneer maple internal doors ?
Hi @lisaf,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that you will be able to repair this so that it perfectly blends with the rest of the door. This is because you have hollow-core doors, which means you will need to cut the veneer so you can install back blocking before filling, sanding, texturing and painting it to match.
The process would be similar to what is shown in How to repair a hole in an internal door.
Start by cutting around the location of the damage using a multitool. Once there is a hole that is large enough to insert some Timber Paint Stirrers, fix them in place to the back of the veneer using wood glue.
After this, use a wood filler in a similar colour to the door to fill the surface, allow it to dry, then give it a sand so that it is smooth.
You could then try a few different things to emulate the texture and pattern of the veneer. One thing you could try is to use a utility knife to cut gouges in the filler to emulate the wood grain. If you do this, please remember to wear gloves and long protective clothing to reduce the risk of lacerations. You can also use craft brushes to apply paint to the patch. If you grab some colour cards, take them home and select a couple that are close to the door, you can have a few sample pots mixed up. You can then use a combination of colours to try and blend the patch in as best as you can.
With this technique, you should be able to repair the door in a way that looks reasonably close to the veneer.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
