g’day Handyb people’s. I need to restore faded jarrah window sills. As you can see they have not had enough tlc. What’s the best way to go about this?
Hi @paulB1,
A good way to bring your jarrah sills back to life is to give them a light sand with 240-grit sandpaper. This will take off the top aged layer of timber and remove water stains, revealing fresh timber underneath. Hand sanding would be fine if it's just this one sill, or an electric sander will make short work of the job.
Once sanded, you can re-oil them as they may have been finished before, but I’d recommend using a polyurethane coating instead. Polyurethane gives much better protection against water damage if moisture ends up on the sill again. If you’d like to keep the natural look of the timber, go with a matt finish, or if you want to change things up you could opt for a gloss finish for more shine and depth.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
