This Victorian era oak stick stand complete with drip has been assaulted by some misguided Shabby Chic exponent. Please my one request is think before ruining antique furniture like this. The conundrum is whether to attempt to strip it completely or hide the shabby chic as an undercoat with more appropriate paint. To strip this would involve a lot of time given the period details so a sensitive heritage paint restoration seems the best way forward.
Heritage paint colour to be chosen
Hello @rgoyne
What an excellent project to be undertaking. I propose using Poly 1L Polystrippa Paint Stripper - 1L to remove the majority of the paint and a detail sander to strip off the residual paint left on the surface. Please note that it will take time and patience to totally strip the paint off the stick stand frame. Please note that the stripper will also remove the original seal of the frame so just be aware that it will be a two-step process, removing the paint and removing the original sealer of the stand. Your goal is to strip the frame back to timber so that you can oil and seal the stand to your preferred colour.
Here are some handy step-by-step guides:
Please remember to wear personal protection such as rubber gloves, goggles and a proper air filter mask when working on your project.

I’ve Janaped or ebonised the stick stand as practiced in the Victorian era rather than stripping it back. I have sprayed the drip tray with flat black. The result overcomes the urge of someone to use chalk based paint on a piece of antique furniture and saves time from intricate stripping given the curves etc and is consistent with the period. Job done.
I have used Fiddly Bits Flat Black and Sikkens ebony test pot. All available in the paint isle at your local Bunnings store
Hello @rgoyne
Thank you very much for the update. The paint job looks great, and it has definitely transformed the character of the stick stand.
