How to test for lead paint?

We have recently bought an old house-  I’m guessing built in the 60’s or 70’s and given the colour scheme and the cracks in the paint I’m suspecting it may have lead based paint through the interior walls. We were planning on DIY painting but want to be sure to do this safely with our young family. Is this advisable for DIY novices? Are lead tester kits accurate and reliable? Thanks all.

Re: lead paint

Hello @nerissa1

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your home having lead paint.

Here is an excellent discussion about lead paint - How to test and remove lead paint on furniture by @GoodyG. The ongoing consensus is to play it safe and assume that the paint has lead in it. My teammate has provided a link to WorkSafe QLD webpage on working with lead-based paints. It provides information on methods of removal that you can consider and the appropriate PPE to use.

However, if you feel that it is too difficult to accomplish by yourself, I suggest engaging the services of a lead paint removal specialist. If you still wish to get some testing swabs it will need to be specially ordered at the special orders desk its called - 3M Lead Check Swabs. It's not a standard stocked item and is subject to availability.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
