Is this door repairable?

This front door is under a covered porch but gets wet during storms. It is peeling and splitting, the moulding is lifting and the weather strip is missing.

Is it possible to repair it? If so what are the steps and products I need to patch it up before I paint?

Re: Is this front door fixable?

Hi @Ambrosia,

That is actually a tricky one because if the door is repaired/replaced the same thing will happen again, admittedly over a period of time.

Is the front of the house facing the prevailing weather?

Could you please post photos of the front porch.

I am thinking to replace with a composite fiberglass door...

Re: Is this front door fixable?

Hi @Ambrosia,

If the door had sentimental value, you could restore it, but it wouldn't be particularly easy,

You'd have to remove the mouldings so you can remove and replace the veneer, which seems to be what is peeling off both at the bottom and inside the mouldings of the door. This is likely possible, but it wouldn't be simple.

Unfortunately, due to the location at the bottom of the door, I don't think any kind of bog or filler would work for any reasonable amount of time.

If there were no sentimental attachment to the door, I would just replace it, ensuring you use a suitable external door and you apply 3 coats of paint to all the surfaces. You could use our Door Installation service if you'd like to go down this route.

I would also look at ways of addressing the water pooling at the door to prevent further issues. A new Door Seal would be the place to start.

Let me know what you think, I am happy to assist further if required.

Jacob
