How can I clean the sealant under the shower glass?

How can I clean the sealant under the shower glass?

The sealant under my shower glass is mouldy. I can't clean it without removing the glass panel. Is this something I can do? Will I need a specialist to come and replace the sealant and if so, who does this?

Re: How can I clean the sealant under the shower glass?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @jc12. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about cleaning silicone.

Since the mould is in the sealant directly under the shower glass, unfortunately, it’ll be very difficult to clean properly without removing the glass panel. In most cases, that old silicone would need to be cut out and replaced with a fresh bead, as even when you can access it, the mould typically stains the silicone, and those stains can't be cleaned away.

Since the sealant sits right beneath the glass, you’d need to take care; shower panels can shatter easily with even slight movement or pressure. If you do intend to work around the glass, make sure you’re wearing safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, trousers, and enclosed footwear.

If you’d prefer to have someone handle it, you could contact a glazier, bathroom repair specialist, or handyperson experienced in resealing showers. They’ll be able to safely remove the old silicone and reseal the area neatly.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
