How to fill gap in floor where old laundry unit used to be?

Hello,

I’m looking for some advice on how to go about filling in this gap left by an old laundry unit we removed? Would I be able to use a self-levelling compound to fill the gap, then install vinyl planks on top to match the existing planks we had installed prior to the removal of the unit? If so, what’s the best way to ensure the level is consistent with the rest of the floor (which already has vinyl planks installed)?

Thanks!

Jade

Hello @Jtuson

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your flooring.

In theory if the vinyl planks were installed straight onto your concrete floor there would be no need to use self-levelling compound unless there was another type of layer installed prior to the installation of the vinyl planks. If there is something underneath the vinyl planks, it will be necessary to find out what it is and if it can be duplicated using timber or some other material. Last option would be self-levelling cement.

However, if there is nothing under the vinyl planks, I propose disassembling the last three rows of the flooring and relaying it with new pieces to cover the gap where the laundry tub use to be.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Hi Eric, thanks for your reply.

There is tile under the vinyl planks, with a self leveling compound over it when the planks were installed.

Hello @Jtuson

Thank you for the additional info and quick response. If there is a tile under the vinyl plant you can use either a timber pine cut out that you can stick on using Selleys Liquid Nails or use Self levelling compound to level up to the tiles. Just keep in mind that your goal is to level-up to the tiles only as the remaining space belongs to the vinyl panels.
