How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

I purchased a Mondella 3 lip centre outlet shower base. A grate/drain is included, but the drain cap does not fit flush with the floor base. As it just clicks in place I thought it was a temporary fitting. Also that it is relatively loose, I can imagine tripping and dislodging it frequently. I thought I'd obtain an alternative metal or plastic cap, such that it would sit flush with the floor, but I am unable to. I've spoken with several team members at different stores, who also thought it odd not to sit flush.

I've contacted the Mondella site and had some further fitting diagrams of the drain sent to me, but not had my questions answered. Even a plumbing store does not have a drain to fit. I cannot see how I can use an alternate drain without some modification to the base or cutting down a part of the new drain.

Bunnings team members at 3 stores have not had anyone else ask about this, nor the central Mondella contact.

If anyone could advise please. Thanks.

Re: How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

Hello @Eonevans,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about your shower base drain.

In order to give our members a better idea of what the shower waste looks like, would it be possible for you to post a photo of the shower tray waste. Can you also please tell me the measurement of the tray? We can then try to assess why the drain cap is not flush with the floor base.

If you need a hand posting the photos, please let me know.

Eric

Re: How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

Hello

I am also having the exact same problem with my Mondella shower drain.  The drain cap sits above floor level by design and is so loose it dislodges when lightly touched.  There is no locking mechanism to keep it secure.  After several months of use it is getting much worse and is now a serious tripping hazard.  This is the drain assembly.  The tiny slatted pieces sit at floor level with a small channel around the outside for the water to flow through into the drain.  The cap has 3 tiny feet which I currently have wrapped in plumbers tape to try to keep it in the drain hole as it is so loose. We do have access to replace the assembly but cannot find anything else that fits as the hole in the shower base is only about 60mm with most drain assemblies requiring 90mm holes.  I hope you are able to offer some solution.   Thank you.

Re: How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

Hi @Kay5,

The Bellessi Chrome Round Drain Cover has a much smaller outlet than a standard waste, so that might be worth exploring. Other than that, have you considered using some silicone on the three feet to help glue them in position? That would help prevent it from being dislodged, though it should still allow you to remove for cleaning.

Re: How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

Thank you so much for your help.  Is there anywhere I could find specs for the Bellessi Drain?

I currently have wrapped the bottom of each small foot with plumbers tape to make them a little thicker to try to get them to sit more firmly into the smooth drain pipe. I believe if I try to force it any tighter that way I will probably break the feet off altogether. Using silicone on the feet would create the same problem. It's such a small area making contact with the pipe there is no way to secure it.  I'm really hoping the Bellessi Drain will fit the base.

Re: How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

Hi @Kay5,

I'm still working on getting the technical drawings for the Bellessi drain. In the meantime, I’ve spoken with the Quality Manager at Mondella, who kindly ran some tests on their drain units for me.

They confirmed that the cap is very secure—it requires significant force to remove and cannot be dislodged by simply kicking it. If your drain cap is coming off easily, it’s likely that the locking feet (designed to grip the lower section and hold the cap in place) may be damaged or worn.

Mondella currently has replacement wastes in stock, and we can arrange to order one through your local store's Special Orders counter if needed.

To clarify, the cap includes a locking mechanism, so if it's coming off with a light touch, it appears that mechanism isn’t functioning as it should.

Re: How to fix Mondella shower base drain higher than floor?

Hi @Kay5,

Here's the technical drawing for the Bellessi waste. The outer face is 90mm across, and the threaded portion is 40mm. My only concern would be the stepped section under the outer face and how that would interact with the recessed section of the shower tray.
