How to maximise a small laundry?

We have a very small laundry space that we would like to renovate to maximise space, make it functional and easy to use.

1.8 m x 0.8 m

we also use the space as a shed/mudroom so space, storage of brooms etc.

Re: How to maximise a very small laundry space/mud room and make it functional?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sraine. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about utilising laundry space.

It is quite a tight space to work with, particularly since it doubles as both a laundry and a small mud room, so every centimetre really has to earn its keep. If the room were even slightly wider than the 800 millimetres, you could comfortably fit an 800 millimetre wall cabinet paired with a narrow 200 millimetre base cabinet beside the washer and dryer. That combination would give you enclosed storage for detergents and cleaning goods, which in turn would let you remove the top shelf under the window. Losing that shelf would immediately make the room feel more open because it clears the eye line and reduces the sense of clutter around the window.

With more of your cleaning products tucked away, you could raise the hooks where the leashes currently hang so they are not obstructing you as you walk into the room. That small improvement alone will make the entry feel less congested. From there, a set of wall-mounted broom or tool hooks, placed just inside the door, would give you a tidy and accessible spot for brooms, mops and similar items without taking up any valuable floor space. It is also worth thinking about the door itself. A standard swinging door tends to steal space in a room this narrow, which can add to the cramped feeling. If you can remove it, replace it with a bi-fold or even convert the opening to a cavity slider, you reclaim that footprint and improve day-to-day usability. Beyond those changes, the options are understandably limited by the size of the room, although the overall layout can still be made more comfortable with small adjustments like these.

Re: How to maximise a small laundry?

Hello @sraine

It looks like there is a closet on the left-hand side of the of the machines, is this space still usable or is it full of household items? If it is usable, how deep is the closet? If the space can be utilized, you'll possibly be able to put in a few extra cabinets.

Re: How to maximise a small laundry?

Hi Eric, there is a window ledge on the left of the machines behind the door. I wonder if we could utilise this space somehow?

Re: How to maximise a small laundry?

Hello @sraine

Thank you for that extra bit of information about your laundry. Yes, you can use that window ledge by installing timber shelves, but it will not be very deep, and you can only put in bottles that are around 100mm to 150mm deep. I believe Mitchells suggested render is the best use of the space.
