How to prepare Aquacheck joins before tiling?

Hi team

i am about to tile my bathroom and I was wanting to know should I plaster where the new aqua check plaster board joins to flatten the surface before tiling and waterproofing of course. My lovely wife choose 1200x600x10 tiles just to add to my work lol .

Re: How to prepare Aquacheck joins before tiling?

Hi @craigb72,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Yes, you should plaster the joins between your Gyprock Aquachek.

You should use Gyprock Wet Area Base Coat, with Gyprock CSR Plasterboard Perforated Paper Jointing Tape to strengthen the joint.

Have a read through the Product Data Sheet for guidance on the application process.

It is much the same as jointing standard plasterboard, you just don't need to add a topping compound as the surface will be hidden behind the waterproofing and tiles.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: How to prepare Aquacheck joins before tiling?

Hi @craigb72,

What material are the tiles made of?

Are they porcelain or ceramic tiles?

I believe you'd be looking at something like Davco Powder Mastic Tile Adhesive, but I'd like to check with our suppliers to ensure it would work.

When I hear back from you, I'll get in touch with our suppliers' technical teams to confirm suitability.

Re: How to prepare Aquacheck joins before tiling?

Hi @craigb72,

Thanks for that.

I've just gotten off the phone with our supplier Sika's technical team, who recommended priming the substrate with Davco PrimeX Surface Primer and then using Davco SMP Evo Tile Adhesive as the adhesive.

Make sure to use a large notched trowel, such as this DTA 12mm Bright Steel Notch Trowel, to apply your adhesive and back butter your tile with a smooth coat of adhesive.

When setting the tiles in place, make sure to move them back and forth then tap them on with a rubber mallet to ensure the notches compress and the two masses of adhesive suction to each other. You don't want any air to remain beneath the tiles.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
