how to unblock damaged sink pipe

My bathroom sink doesn’t drain water and the level is sitting very close to the top. I’ve tried everything to unblock the drain including drain snakes and cleaner etc. I think the issue is a blockage in the u shaped pipe underneath. But I’m not sure what the previous owners of this house have done with the tape. Can I still clean the pipe with that plastic tape covered?

Re: how to unblock damaged sink pipe

Hello @sophie1199

Thanks for sharing your question about your basin trap. The tape wrapped around the top is called the Tommy Tape 25mm x 3m Clear Self Fusing Silicone Tape and is used to stop leaks. I generally suggest using the drain snakes and chemical cleaners, but if none of these items have produced positive results, I suggest engaging the services of a registered plumber.

There is definitely something blocking the drain and I'm afraid regular troubleshooting is not going to solve it.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: how to unblock damaged sink pipe

Hi @sophie1199,

That is a DIY Fail-

Everything needs to be removed, cleaned, inspected and any damaged parts replaced and then correctly installed.

I suggest you engage a plumber to do the job.

Looks like they had a go at unblocking the trap and when replacing the pipe ended up at a angle and/or cross threaded the fitting, then tried the tape fix.

Cheers
