Re: Garage brick repair

Hi @Flora1,

This level of cracking indicates some significant movement in the structure, and it is unlikely that a repair can simply be carried out at the location of the cracking. There's a good chance that this repair would require some form of work on the foundation of your garage.

Unfortunately, the only suggestion I have is to contact a business that specialises in brick structure repairs. They will be able to assess the situation to determine the specific cause of the cracking, offer and quote on a method to repair and then carry out those repairs.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob

Re: Garage brick repair

Hi @Flora1,

Unfortunately, we do not have tradespeople that we could recommend for this work.

The best thing to do in your situation is Google something along the lines of "brickwork crack repair Melbourne" and see what pops up.

You can then reach out to a few different companies so they can come out to quote.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Garage brick repair

Hi @Flora1

Before you need a bricklayer, you need to establish the cause of such structural movement in the wall. which, @JacobZ has mentioned will be highly likely something to do with the foundation such as the concrete slab of the garage. Often issues with ground foundation can be caused by long term water from either blocked, very damaged or missing guttering and/or downpipes.

So, in order to find out what is wrong and the works required type into Google "Residential Structural Engineer Inspections near me". That will bring up a few companies you can start the ring around with.

Re: How to repair garage brick wall?

With cracking and separation like this, there is a real risk that loose bricks could drop, especially if the wall shifts further, so the safest step right now is to keep people and pets away from the area and avoid walking or parking near or under the affected section. If you can, isolate it with a temporary barrier such as cones, tape, or temporary fencing until it has been properly assessed, and avoid leaning ladders or storing anything against the wall. There is a real risk of serious injury or fatality if this section falls on someone.

Because this looks like structural movement, it is best to arrange an urgent inspection by a structural engineer or a reputable structural brickwork or foundation repair company, as they can identify the cause (often footing or slab movement, drainage, or moisture issues) and specify the correct repair.

Once the cause is confirmed and addressed, a bricklayer can then complete the appropriate rectification if required.
