Hello team, just installed a basalt colorbond fence, there is a gap under. Considered various options, will use metal (steel) garden edging to cover the gap. However, there are available only in corten (weathered) or plain stainless steel. Will paint stainless steel have good results, which paint is good ?
Hi @oasis1frog,
Thank you for your question.
You can paint stainless steel, but the correct preparation and products are essential if you want a great result.
Start by cleaning the stainless steel to remove any dirt, grease, oils, or oxidation. Use a cloth with some mineral turpentine to wipe down the surface thoroughly. Then lightly abrade it with fine-to-medium grit sandpaper (around 240–320 grit) to create a slightly rough surface for better adhesion. Once sanded, wipe away all dust and residue to ensure the surface is clean and allow it to dry before applying primer.
You should then use an etching primer that specifically mentions suitability with stainless steel, such as Dulux Metalshield Etch Primer Spraypak Light Grey, to prime and seal the surface of your edging.
Once the primer is fully cured, apply two coats of Dulux Weathershield tinted to the colour Basalt as your topcoat. This paint is designed for exterior use and provides long-lasting resistance to UV rays, moisture, and flaking. Apply two thin coats, allowing proper drying time between each. The result will be a durable, weather-resistant finish.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
