How to fix loose fence palings?

I have some loose fence pailings that I would like to fix. What would be the best way to go about it? Is there a particular nail size I should be using?

Re: Nails for fence pailings

Hi @NicoleDIY,

For fixing loose fence palings, it’s generally best to use 50 mm screws driven in with a drill driver rather than nails. You could use nails, but given the age of the timber and the likelihood that the supporting structure behind the palings isn’t very solid, driving nails in can be tricky, and they may not hold well. Using screws with a drill driver will give a far more secure result. Because the timber is older, it’s a good idea to pre-drill the holes through the palings with a 3 mm drill bit first to prevent splitting. If you do want to go with nails, a 50 mm galvanised nail can be used, but screws will provide a longer-lasting fix.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
