Re: How to kill weeds without hurting lawn?

Hello @Mud_Ok

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.

The lawn in the photo appears to be Kikuyu grass, which is known for its dense, bright green coverage and vigorous growth. I can see a few small weeds scattered throughout, including what looks like some broadleaf varieties and possibly some grassy weeds.

To keep weeds at bay, regularly mow the lawn at the recommended height (around 3-5 cm for Kikuyu) to discourage weed growth. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring can help prevent new weeds from sprouting. For existing weeds, spot-treat with a selective herbicide suitable for Kikuyu. Maintaining healthy, thick turf through proper fertilization and watering will naturally suppress weeds, as Kikuyu is quite competitive when well-maintained.

Since the weed has not yet made any headway into your lawn, you should still be able to manage it with manual removal.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to kill weeds without hurting lawn?

Hi Eric,

Thank you so much. I mow my lawn once a month to keep it around 3 cm.

Actually there are lots of clovers, nutgrass and some other unknown weeds in my yard suppressing lawn. They are not dominating yet but seems like they have momentum to take over whole yard. I try to maintain them short and hand weeding some spots but unfortunately there are much more in certain areas. I just mowed to 3cm, fertilized and watered yesterday. what is your suggestion?  I do not have too much time on this yard but I really want it look well.

By the way, I just realized some areas' lawn appeared to be yellow after mowed. Do I need to fix this first with aerating, fertilizing and watering. or do I need to deal with weed first.

Thanks

Re: How to kill weeds without hurting lawn?

Hello @Mud_Ok

I propose looking after the health of your lawn first with your suggestion of aerating, fertilizing and watering. It would be best to have your lawn in good health before you use any type of herbicide or weed killer on it. While your lawn is recovering, I recommend manually removing as much of the weeds as possible or cutting it to the ground to prevent it from photosynthesizing.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
