How to prepare backyard for laying turf?

My first post here.. Was looking forward to joining the community

We bought our first home and I have started with my priority projects for the backyard. It came with an existing lawn (couch) and it is pretty dried and patchy, after 3 months it started to turn green but 50% of the lawn never came back to life. A lot of trips to Bunnings helped me work with it, but finally they said that , looks like the lawn is dead. So, I decided to strip it off all out. I am the process of clearing smaller roots now. My question is regarding the soil and my turn choice. I am planning to go with tiftuf bermuda. In regards with the soil, how much of soil height will I need to add, considering there was a lawn already growing in it. I am looking to level the yard as there are many places where there were bumps and dips . I do have some remaining Daisy's Organic Mix that I used for my new garden beds, wondering if I can use that.. But, at the same time, I also think that I am spending good $$ for the lawn, and if I do not use the proper top soil, it might not help the lawn.

I am really happy how this is coming , looking forward to lush green in couple of weeks . I did find some different growth on the turf though, I am not sure what exactly is this ? is it part of the turf or some kind of weed .. you can see those maroon tips

Re: Backyard makeover

Looking great @Oscar13! You might want to add a little top-dressing mix in between the turf slabs where they join each other to fill them in. That will encourage the grass to blend better.

Those things you're seeing are the Buffalo seed pods; nothing to worry about at all.

Re: Backyard makeover

Thanks for getting back Mitch.
I did bring in Scotts lawn builder last week, thought of waiting couple of weeks before I level the entire lawn as there are dips in it from the initial turf laying I did. Is it advisable to top dress the entire lawn now or wait for 2 -3 weeks more ? I could do the top dress between the joins now .

What about doing a seaweed feed ?

Re: Backyard makeover

I would give the lawn a few more weeks before topdressing it @Oscar13. It would be very stressed at the moment from the transplant, so you don't want to cover the leaf blades up.

You could give the lawn a feed of Powerfeed, though using Seasol is preferable at this stage.

Re: Backyard makeover

Hello Everyone,

Here is what the lawn looks at the end of 4 weeks . @MitchellMc , thanks for the tip the other day to fill the gaps with soil, that did work out great and the lawn looks so much better now, I still need to fill in more gaps. The lawn has not yet reached the min height of my 33cm lawn mover, and hence I can't get rid of those seed pods as they add the maroon look to the lawn. The lawn is growing dense and feels so good under the feet

And I also noticed that some weeds or maybe my old couch lawn is creeping up , I tried to remove them, but could not get all of them from the roots and they shot back up in a couple of days.. I might need to use a non-selective weed killer but I think about the pain staking method of painting the leaves , any other methods you suggest ? and what weed killer should I use if i have to go that path ?

Re: Backyard makeover

Hello @Oscar13

I suggest trying out the Saxon Weed Puller for a non-chemical option. But for spot application, I recommend using Yates 1L Ready To Use Zero 48 Hour Action Weed Killer in combination with the Yates Zero Weeding Herbicide Applicator Brush.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when using the chemicals.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
