How to reattach Gardena 30m retractable hose?

Hello community,

I have a Gardena 30m retractable hose that has come loose and fell of the wall recently. I need to get a new dowel and screw as per screenshot below taken from its manual. Does anyone know what's the size I should be getting? Thank you very much.

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Hello @otnimus1

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your hose reel.

I suggest bringing one of the old dowel/wall-plugs with you along with the screw when you go to the store. It's probable that the wall-plug has shrunk or deteriorated after being exposed to the weather for some time. I recommend using a tape measure to measure the current size of the hole in the wall. Once you have the measurement, I suggest getting a wall plug that is close to the size you've measured. You can also get the wall plug that is the next size up from what you currently have and get the next one after that.

It's also important to make sure that the screw you have will still work with the wall plugs you've purchased. If it is too small now, you'll need to get the next size up as well. Please remember to get galvanized screws so that they can be used for outside. All you need to do now is test which wall plug will fit best. You ae looking for a firm fit but not overly tight as it is the screw that makes the plug expand inside the hole providing a strong grip.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Hi @EricL thank you so much for your response.

I just read another thread this morning that I feel is also relevant to my situation. From that post, do you think concremate or Ramset 300ml Chemset UltraFix Plus will help in my case? If so, which one of the two you would recommend?

To give you more info, I provide photos of the wall where I attach the hose, the spare brick that I have (I don't know which one I drilled into) and the current screw/wall plug. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Hi @otnimus1,

It looks like the drilled holes were probably a little oversized, which is why the wall plug and screw pulled out. The edges of the holes appear slightly wallowed, which means the plug isn’t gripping properly. You’ve got a couple of options. The simplest is to shift the bracket slightly and drill fresh holes of the correct size, then reinstall the screws and plugs in the new positions.

If you want to stay in the same spot, you could use a Ramset UltraFix, which is designed to glue plugs into brick. Applying a little UltraFix into the hole before inserting the plug will help it adhere to the brick and take up the extra space in the oversized hole, giving a much firmer hold. Standard ramplugs could also work if you step up to a slightly larger size, but for maximum security in this situation, gluing with UltraFix is probably the best approach.

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Hi @MitchellMc thank you for your response.

If I use Ramset UltraFix, do I still need to size up the plug? Or I can use the original size?

And another question: do I just fill the hole with Ramset UltraFix and then put the wall plug in? Thank you!

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

That really depends on what the current hole size is in the wall @otnimus1. If the next size up would fit in the hole, then it's a good indication that a larger version should be used. If it's only a little bit loose, then the Ultrafix should resolve that.

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Thanks @MitchellMc . Sorry just edited my post to ask another question:

Do I just fill the hole with Ramset UltraFix and the put the wall plug in? Thank you.

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

No need to fill it entirely, as the excess will be pushed out when you place the plug @otnimus1. I would squeeze a liberal amount into the hole and coat the plug before inserting.

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Thank you so much @MitchellMc

Re: Gardena 30m retractable hose

Just want to give an update that I have put the Gardena back up.

I ended up using plugs and screws of same size as the originals with Ramset UltraFix Plus. Hopefully they hold this time.

Thank you @MitchellMc and @EricL for your kind help.
