What metal for garden arch?

What metal for garden arch?

I want to try and make a metal arch using a metal panel curved over and tied to steel fence posts on each side. All the (American) websites I've found call it cattle panel. I think will need about 5-6m lengths. I'm hoping for something that can take a bit of weight for when vines start to bear fruit.

Would ARC 6m x 2.4m x 6mm Reinforcing Mesh be suitable or do you have any other suggestions? I'm having trouble telling whats too rigid to curve.

Morning @jess27

Would any of these fit the bill?

More pleasing to the eye than bent mesh?

Re: metal for garden arch

I'm looking to make something a lot bigger for trellising a few different veggie crops (passionfruit, trombocino etc) I'd have to join together too many of the pre-made arches to get the same growing area.

Re: metal for garden arch

Hi @jess27,

Speaking from my experiences, the ARC 6m x 2.4m x 6mm Reinforcing Mesh is relatively easy to bend, but it should still be strong enough to support the weight of climbing plants.

Once bent, you could tie it to your posts using Jack 1.57mm x 95m Annealed Tie Wire.

It wouldn't be as polished as a preformed garden arch, but it would be practical and easy to install.

I'd love to see it once you're done. Please let me know if you need any help along the way.

Re: metal for garden arch

OK @jess27

Where I buy steel, they tell me 100mm X 5mm bends nicely for gardens.

Thinking two. Ends concreted. Then weld mesh or rod between them for rigidity.

How high were you thinking?

Just an afternoon doodle thought.

Cheers.
