Re: backyard

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @aman1. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about levelling a lawn.

It sounds like you’re thinking about the project, but to give useful advice, we need a bit more detail. Are you looking for guidance on how to actually level your backyard, or tips on preparing the soil for grass and mulch? Are there any slopes, drainage issues, or obstacles we should know about?

In general, to level a backyard, you’d start by clearing the area of debris, rocks, or old plants, then use a rake and possibly a shovel or small machinery to even out the soil. You need to decide on your finished height and move soil from the high side to the lower side. If you don't have free soil, you might need to look at a bulk delivery, and it would be best to speak with our Special Order team in-store about that. Once it’s level, you can decide where your grass will go and where you want the mulch area. For the mulch side, it’s a good idea to lay down a weed mat first, then spread your mulch evenly over it. That keeps it tidy and helps prevent weeds.

It's important to clearly define your mulch and lawn areas with a buried garden edging that finishes flush with the level. This will help keep your mulch out of the lawn.

If you can share a bit more about the slope, or what kind of grass and mulch you’re thinking of, we can give more specific tips.

Re: How to level and landscape backyard?

Our Special Orders team can help organise bulk fill if you need material to level your lawn @aman1. You would simply request bulk soil or fill in the quantities you need, which is typically sold in 1 cubic metre amounts. If you have a rough idea of the area size and how much height you need to make up on the low side, they can help you estimate how many cubic metres to order and arrange delivery to your property.

If you decide that the work is a bit too much to tackle yourself, you would need to engage a professional landscaper. When speaking with them, it’s worth discussing how they plan to manage drainage once the yard is levelled, what type of fill and topsoil they recommend, how they will retain the soil if the slope is significant, and how they will separate the lawn and mulch areas so everything stays neat over time. Talking through these points upfront will help ensure the finished yard looks good and performs well long term.
