I wanted to add some charm and character to my very stock standard kitchen. I have always loved the shaker style doors and because I couldn’t afford a brand new kitchen I decided to give it a go myself.

I started by using a heat gun to take the laminate off the doors. I patched the holes from the original handles then sanded it smooth.
I then used 3mm mdf board cut into 45mm strips, then glued and clamped it to the doors. Once the glue dried I patched the joins and then sanded until very smooth.
They were then ready for undercoat and paint.
I also cut a very thin strip of mango wood and glued it over the metal range hood to add more detail to the kitchen.
This project probably cost me around $200 and all the supplies I used were from Bunnings.

I am very happy with how it turned out and I feel more confident in myself now to try more diy projects ✌🏻

Re: Cheap kitchen makeover!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @jasmine_rose. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for sharing your amazing project.

That is undoubtedly a budget makeover with dramatic results. I love your ingenuity and the style you've chosen. It's a bit hard to tell from the pictures but is that a deep green you've used on the lower cabinetry? It looks wonderful. The strip of mango wood really sets it all off, and you made a great choice to include it.

Well done, and I look forward to hearing about your next project.
