How to install pantry shelves?

I'm in the process of pulling a part my pantry, and redoing it.

The plan is to install these shelves (https://www.bunnings.com.au/flexi-storage-home-solutions-600-x-16-x-300mm-white-matte-shelf-600mm-wh...), and this bench top (https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-1800-x-600-x-18mm-golden-teak-acacia-multi-use-panel_p0456515) with these brackets (https://www.bunnings.com.au/carinya-175-x-150mm-white-angle-bracket_p3961581)

I'll be able to get probably the first two holes of the brackets into the wall stud, but the third may have to be attached via a toggle bolt or wall anchor.

When mounting these shelves and the bench top with the brackets floating style, will I need to reinforce the shelves/bench top with MDF or plywood, or can I just mount them straight onto the brackets?

I have one wall that is approximately 1170mm and another one that is 600mm, in a L-shape.

Re: How to install pantry shelves?

Hi @Davofit,

Those 175 x 150mm brackets, unfortunately, aren’t going to be long enough to properly support a 600mm deep benchtop. They’ll take some of the weight at the rear, but you’ll need extra support at the front corners to stop sagging or pulling away from the wall over time. A common way to do this is to fix the larger brackets at the rear into studs where possible, then add a smaller angle bracket from the front corner of the benchtop to the adjacent wall to give it that extra stability. If there is no wall mounting point present, you'll want to run a vertical section of benchtop (or a panel cut from the same material) underneath at the corner to act as a leg and carry the load. That combination of rear brackets, corner support, and a vertical leg section will give you a sturdy installation without needing to reinforce the panels themselves.

I've created a rendering below to illustrate.

The only real alternative would be to use very large stayed brackets, such as the Carinya 600 x 450mm Galvanised Heavy Duty Straight Stay Bracket.

If you can draw us a sketch or take a photo of the area and indicate where the bench top and shelves are going, our members might have some other suggestions.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to install pantry shelves?

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for your reply, and the photo. I just realised, I should have included that I will be cutting the acacia board in half, so that it is only 300mm deep. Does that change whether the original brackets I mentioned could be used or not?

And could those white matte shelves be used without needing to reinforce them to make them thicker?

Re: How to install pantry shelves?

That certainly makes a difference, @Davofit. In that case, as long as you have a few brackets along the length, then they would be capable of holding a 300mm wide bench.

The shelves are designed to work as is. I don't see any need to reinforce them.
