Re: How to install curtain bracket in a metal stud

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Kantobaba. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about hanging a curtain bracket.

The first step is to check whether there’s a steel stud directly behind the spot where you want to install the curtain bracket, and a stud detector will come in handy for that. If there is, the strongest option is to use metal self-tapping screws, which will go through the plasterboard and bite securely into the stud.

If there isn’t a stud in the right position, you’ll need to repair the damaged plasterboard and then use heavy-duty anchors such as expanding toggles, which are generally the strongest fixings for plasterboard alone. In your case, it looks like toggles may have already been used and the plasterboard was weakened, so the extra weight of the curtains caused it to fail. The two main options are therefore to either locate and fix directly into a stud for maximum strength, or repair the wall and use new toggles or move the bracket to a stud position for better support.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

thank you, this was helpful, just one last question regarding the screws, should I use stainless steel screws or galvanized screw for this job? which one is better?

Re: How to install curtain bracket in a metal stud

There's only a limited selection of screw types designed to self-drill into steel @Kantobaba. It's typically only galvanised. Stainless steel is too soft to cut through steel.
