How to insulate windows in a rental?

I am renting. At night it gets really cold. How can I improve thermal insulation of the windows? They have vertical blinds and a metalic frame for the glass. I think double glazing is too expensive, the landlord isn't interested. What would you recommend?

I do apologise, but I'm getting a "This product is not found" response now. The results now show the insect screen range of products. It's the blockout version you'd want, and you might need to Special Order that item.

The link does show products, but I'm concerned they are not the blockout version I was referencing, rather the flyscreen versions.

Just an update... We had quite a cold winter and I decided to use 3mm clear perspex sheets held on by Velcro over the windows. On large floor to ceiling windows I had a top and bottom piece of perspex so as not to get too heavy. A friend told me that in his part of England they have been using perspex as the "poor man's double glazing" for decades. And yes, it did make quite a difference in insulating the house.

In summer, I'm planning to remove the perspex as it's just held on by Velcro. Then store it in the shed and wait for next winter... Although several friends visiting had no idea the perspex was up until I mentioned it to them. So maybe I will leave it on over summer too.
