How to repair broken shelf in wardrobe?

Hi all, last night the wooden shelf timber snapped due to the weight. I would like to know how to fix it and how to add more support to this L shaped shelf.

Thank you very much!

Re: How to repair broken shelf in wardrobe?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @kajidzz. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about shelving.

That type of shelf doesn’t have a whole heap of support apart from the timber runners, which have broken. This design generally means it’s only suitable for lightweight materials. You can either remove and replace the broken timber support and add extra supports, or you could try repairing it by filling the crack with PVA glue, clamping it closed, and then screwing up through the bottom of the support into the shelf above to help solidify the break.

Once repaired, it’s important to look at adding more support. The benefit of this shelf style is that it keeps the area below clear for hanging clothes, but that also limits your support options. One approach would be to install a vertical piece of timber running from the top of the shelf, right in the corner, up to the ceiling. You’ll need to locate a ceiling joist to secure it properly. This will give you a solid fixing point to help bear the load on the top shelf. Alternatively, you could add a support running from the bottom of the shelf down to the floor, though this might obstruct your hanging and storage space below.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for your reply, really appreciate you explain!

I have Gorilla wood glue, what kind of clamp and screws would you recommend for 80mm thickness?

I prefer to add a timber support running to the bottom of the shelf, what's the best way to secure the running with the shelf?

Thank you again!

Re: How to repair broken shelf in wardrobe?

I'd recommend using a quick clamp @kajidzz. These 60mm timber screws should do the job.

I'd recommend something like this Porta 42 x 42mm 1.2m DAR Square General Purpose Pine for an additional support.

Thank you again, one last question - how do I secure the timber with the shelf with screw? Or do I just put it under the shelf?

Re: How to repair broken shelf in wardrobe?

You would screw through the top of the shelf into the end of the timber @kajidzz.
