hi there, I have this fireplace, the chimney has been taken out and there was an old gas heater installed. I would like to replace the damaged vertical bricks, which I presume form a lintel, and then take out the bricks that were later inserted (see pic). Also please note that there is a steel lintel under the more recently installed bricks and a bar under the vertical bricks. My question is, would it work to replace the vertical bricks carefully 3-4 at a time, and then remove the newer ones? The brickwork seems pretty solid and I’m guessing the newer bricks were just put there for the gas heater, but I don’t want it to collapse! Cheers, Greg
Hi @gregaldous,
Thank you for your question about replacing damaged bricks on your fireplace.
Unfortunately, I couldn't say with confidence that you could remove and replace the bricks without any issues, as I can only base things on a few images and a description. The structural implications of removing even one or two bricks at a time could be much more than anticipated, and the results could be dangerous.
I'd suggest you have a bricklayer, builder, or engineer come out to assess the structure and offer their recommendations based on a physical inspection. It would be much better to base your approach on the advice of a professional who has inspected the structure in person.
Sorry that I can't be more help.
Jacob
