Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Mikewr. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a crack.

It’s one of those times when adding some images would really help our members provide informed suggestions. Let me know if you need a hand uploading images.

To give some preliminary advice, it’s important to determine whether this is hard plaster over brick or plasterboard. If it’s hard plaster over brick, you can chase out the crack and remove any loose material with a chisel. Then, use a suitable hard plaster product to fill the crack and skim coat the area to achieve a smooth finish. This method ensures a durable repair that blends well with the existing wall.

For plasterboard, you might need a different approach. This often involves joint compound and possibly reinforcing the crack with joint tape before finishing with a skim coat of topping compound.

Here's a helpful step-by-step guide: How to repair cracks in plaster. Remember your PPE including a face mask, safety glasses and gloves.

Given the property's age, it's important to note that homes built or renovated before 1990 are a risk for asbestos exposure. Before starting any work, determine if asbestos is present by having your home assessed and taking necessary precautions to protect yourself and others. Access resources from the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency for guidance on safe practices.

Once we have a clearer idea of the wall structure, we can provide more specific recommendations.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
