I have an outdoor bench, which looks weathered now. I would love to restore it to its natural condition. Please suggest me which stain or polish I could use. I don’t like the glossy look of the varnish hence looking for alternatives. This is the bench

Hi @fcjoseph,
Could you please share a few images of your bench? That will help our members get a better idea of how weathered it is and allow them to suggest the most suitable restoration products and techniques.
If the timber simply needs a refresh and hasn’t greyed or deteriorated, then a new coat of exterior furniture oil will likely do the trick. That’s probably what was used on the bench originally. Furniture oils are great for enhancing the timber’s natural tone without creating the glossy finish you get from varnish, and they also provide UV and moisture protection.
However, if the timber has greyed, splintered, stained, or started to deteriorate, you’ll need to sand it back to fresh timber before re-oiling. Start with a coarse sandpaper to remove the damaged surface layer, then work your way up to a finer grit for a smooth finish. Once sanded, wipe away any dust and apply two coats of exterior furniture oil with a brush or clean cloth, allowing time for the first coat to penetrate and dry before applying the second.
If you can upload some photos, we can help determine how much prep work your bench needs and suggest a specific oil or brand that will give you the natural finish you’re after.

this is how the bench looks like now
Hi @fcjoseph,
There’s a bit of staining happening there with lighter and darker patches across the timber, as well as some visible watermarks. If you’d like to really restore the bench and get it looking fantastic, it would be worth sanding those areas right back to fresh timber. The watermarks will otherwise show through slightly once you apply your finish. I've marked some of the areas below.
The arm sections also look a little deteriorated, so you could give them a quick sand with some 180-grit sandpaper to smooth out any roughness and remove the surface wear. Once that’s done, you’ll be ready to re-oil the bench. A couple of coats of exterior furniture oil will help bring back the natural tone of the timber and protect it from further weathering.
