How to build a landing with stairs?

I would like to build a landing with stairs (see picture) for our side door. 900mm from the bottom of door to ground (soil.) What is the steps? Build a deck, attach stairs to it then do railings? Also any recommendations for what materials should I use? Thank you

Re: How to build a landing with stairs

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @EmmaHih. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a landing with stairs.

The first step will be to design your landing, including the frame and how it will be supported. Since your door is 900mm above ground level, and you're effectively building a small elevated deck, you'll need to ensure it's solid and safe. Depending on the size of the landing you want, a good approach would be to install four posts concreted into the ground at the corners to support the frame. From there, you would build the frame using treated timber to create a strong platform.

Once the landing frame is secure and level, you can move onto building and attaching the stairs. You’ll need to work out the stair rise and run to make sure they are comfortable and safe to use — stair stringers can be bought pre-cut for common sizes, or you can custom-make them if needed.

After the stairs are installed, you would then move on to fitting the handrails a bottom rail and balustrades, which are important for safety on a structure like this. Because this is an elevated landing and will need to comply with building regulations, it would be a good idea to enlist the help of a professional either for the build itself or at least to check your plans before you start, to make sure everything meets construction codes.

For materials, I'd suggest using H3 treated pine or H4 for any parts in contact with the ground. For decking boards, pine, hardwood or composite decking would be good choices.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to build a landing with stairs

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you for the information. I have made a plan, for the landing we are going to secure one side to the house (timber frame weatherboard house) and use two Buildtuff blocks for posts to sit on at the other side. I watched some videos on YouTube this is how they do, remove siding, stick some sort of self-adhesive roof underlayer to house, fix a piece of flashing then fix a ledger board over it. Then carry on the rest like building a deck. The question is what should I use for the underlayer? Can I find something from Bunnings?

Hi @EmmaHih,

I'm not entirely sure what this "underlayer" would be. Could you take some screenshots of it, or link us to the video you're referencing?

Let me tag @Nailbag to see if he has any thoughts.

Re: How to build a landing with stairs

Hi @EmmaHih

As with @MitchellMc I am unclear exactly what the build plan is. Looking at your sample photos and some of the terminology used lends itself to be USA based which doesn't comply with AU building standards.

Build-tuff blocks for starters are designed to be used on already stable solid ground not soil. You will require min 90m x 90mm posts suitably inserted into the ground and concreted in based on above ground height.

Depending on overall size and above ground height may trigger a building permit for your area. This should be investigated as if required, will answer some of your questions on build requirements.

Please check out this video, at 00:57 in that video which he used the underlayer things. Is it necessary? If so, do we have a similar products here?

Re: How to build a landing with stairs

Hi @EmmaHih,

That's self-adhesive flashing. The closest product we would have would be the Byute flashing tape

I'm not entirely sure that opening up the side of your house for attachment purposes is the best solution here. You're creating a great risk of water penetration into the dwelling in order to find an attachment location. I would prefer that the landing be created with four posts concreted into the ground and then pinned to the house frame through the cladding and into the structural timber for additional support.

Removing your cladding is just opening up the house to potential water ingress.
