How to build a permanent hangi pit?

I want to build/make a permanent hangi pit that you can cover with a nice garden or feature

What sized Hangi pit were you wanting to build? If you were thinking of a smaller variety, burying a Jumbuck Rustic Iron Fire Bowl would give you a great enclosure to hold the hot rocks and food. Alternatively, you should find this step-by-step guide helpful: How to build a fire pit. In your case, instead of building it above ground, you would build it below.

If you were to build the Hangi similar to the one pictured below, you could then make up a couple of decking board panels that covered it up once you're finished. I really like this design and feel it could be incorporated well into your garden plans.

I have a group of guys that are keen on building these. I am sure there will be others  if I got enough interested do you thinks Bunnings would run a DIY session for us.

One of the best ways to find out if the store can hold such an activity is to get in contact with your local stores AO (activities organizer). In this case the AO of Bunnings Gisborne +64 6 869 3300. Once you get in contact with them you can explain your proposal and see what they say.
