How to build an outdoor screen?

Hi,

I want to make a outdoor garden screen similar to the one in attached pics. I am not able to make it myself but have a great handyman who can make it for me.

My questions:

1, I want to purchase the materials - what will I need?

2, Does anyone know if there are instructions anywhere online. The chap who made the one in attached pics did say it was simple enough but I would like some sort of a guide!

3, I would like to use wood that ages to a grey colour and does to need to be treated. Suggestions?

n.b. I do not know the exact height and length however am told that all the timber was bought from Bunnings.

Thank you for any ideas/thoughts,

Carole

Re: Instructions and materials needed

Hello @cassy1

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about building an outdoor garden screen.

You can easily make a similar looking fence using the following materials:

Once the Merbau has seasoned it will turn into a silver-grey finish. But it's much better if you were to maintain the Merbau colour by oiling it as it will last much longer rather than leaving it unprotected.

Let me call on our experienced members @AlanM52 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you have any other questions we can help with, p please let us know.

Hi @cassy1

As an alternative to the excellent advice by @cassy1, you could also consider utilising one of the many pre-made panels. Albeit not as wide and so you will need several of them. But their maybe a considerable cost saving in both labour and materials over building from scratch.

Re: How to build an outdoor screen?

Hi @cassy1,

Late to arrive here (again) this time one of the walker wheels jammed 🙂

I am leaning towards @Nailbag's suggestion and Sample 1 would definitely be my choice - looks good.

Cheers

Re: How to build an outdoor screen?

Hi @Nailbag,

Thank you for these ideas. I do like the first and second  ones particularly. I am yet to price up the materials required for Eric's plan however I agree it would no doubt be a cheaper alternative.

Many thanks again,

Carole

Re: How to build an outdoor screen?

Hi @AlanM52,

Thank you for your thoughts. Yes I like both the first and second options as well. My native garden is not formal by any means though there is structure to it and I want to create some 'rooms' so a few of the panels would work nicely.

Thank you,

Carole
