I am wondering if decking can be done on the concrete with clearance of 85mm upto the bick? Is there any other alternate options except timber tiles?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sbis. It's sensational to have you join us and many thanks for your question on building a deck.
With only 85mm clearance, you’re really limited in what you can do. In standard construction, you’d need enough space for joists, decking boards, and airflow underneath – but in your case, even if you turned 45mm joists on their edge, you’d only have about 21mm of ventilation left, which isn’t enough to allow proper drainage and airflow.
Installing joists and decking that close to concrete will trap moisture and almost certainly shorten the life of the timber, especially outdoors. That’s why it’s not considered best practice.
Given your limited height, the most practical option would be composite decking tiles, which we can special order for you through Decko. These are designed for low-clearance applications, sit directly on the slab, and still give you the decking look without the issues of decay.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
