I have this awning window and the awning window hook/stay which clips to the hinge when installed is broken, where can I find a replacement or what are my options for fixing this please?
Hi @ELI5,
This type of awning window hinge system is unfortunately quite outdated, and exact replacement parts are typically not available through standard retail stores because these hooks and stays are no longer commonly used on modern windows. Finding an exact match would be very difficult.
Your practical options are limited. One approach is to replace the entire hinge system with a modern equivalent that will fit the window frame and allow the window to operate safely. Another option, if you want to retain the original hardware, is to have a custom bracket or hook fabricated to suit the existing hinge, though that usually requires a metalworker or specialist fabricator.
Because this is older technology, there isn’t a simple off-the-shelf solution, so either updating to a contemporary hinge system or commissioning a custom part are the realistic paths forward.
If you can show us more images from different angles and how the window operates with this hinge type we might be able to advise on available hardware that could suit.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Thanks. Here are more pics. It has a window winder which is used to open and close it. The friction stay at the top attaches it to the frame.
I just wanted to clarify @ELI5, how is the hook stay broken? Does the window come off the hinge when opened? From the look of your pictures, I am wondering whether it is actually broken or whether that is how it is supposed to look. I presume that when the window is lifted up to the eave, the hook portion allows the window to be removed from the hanger.
Let me tag @Dave-1, @Nailbag, @AlanM52 and @Noyade for their thoughts.

Hi @ELI5
as with @MitchellMc I can't see from the supplied photos where the hinge/s is broken. If anything, being heavily painted over they would be causing additional friction on the winder to open/close the window.
What exactly makes you think it's broken?
Bunnings do sell if necessary both gal and a special order powder-coated replacements.

Good Afternoon @ELI5
Thats an interesting hinge you have
I have not seen one like that before but it looks like it would work nicely. Im with the others and cant see anywhere that looks obviously broken? Ive gone back over a few times and I am scratching my head.
Whichever way, replacing like for like I would be heading towards any recyle yard, keep an eye out for the same aged buildings being dismantled or look in specialised recyling window stores.
Switching it over to a new mechanisim/hinges I would probarlly get a quote and consider the whole house, maybe bit by bit replacement via a glazier. Just because if its one we dont recognise now and its failed then time will add more issue sto teh other windows.

Hi @ELI5,
I have been there before... many times.
When we bought our first new home in 1979 located in a court it was one of 4 or 5 homes all built by the same builder with the same windows and Whitco hardware. Windows would often start jamming and it became a routine for me to remove and do the power plane thing but on one occasion a neighbour decided to help out and when removing the window it dropped on one top corner and when he tried to straighten the bent over hooked tip it broke off. That is the only time I needed to replace a hanger, ended up Bunnings with the broken one and discovered the are available as a special order. When I said 'been there many times' it was to repair/replace the winders that were forcefully wound out and damaged in some way.
So... I am also wondering what exactly has happened to your hanger?
Cheers
