How to fix broken latch on Colorbond gate?

Hi, the latch is broken and we have removed part of it. Would like some advice on how to fix/ replace it. Can we buy parts and do we need to replace  both parts? We have tried to glue back on but did not work. Thank you!

Re: How to fix broken latch on colorbond gate

Hello @LW2

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the latch on your Colorbond gate.

I suggest having an extended look at this discussion - Solved: How to fix gate latch coming off the metal post by @hayunit. There are some very good suggestions on how to support and re-attach the latch back onto the gate. My favourite is inserting a piece of timber down into the post and use that as a mount for the screws to hold the latch in place. My best advice is to hammer the lifted steel back down so that it is nice and flat when you re-attach the latch.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to fix broken latch on Colorbond gate?

You can find I had to buy the combination of the D latch and striker plate, you can't the striker plate on its own.

What I found is install a gate stop helped prevent the striker plate from being pulled off the gate.

Now that is installed, the gate doesn't bang on the striker latch so hard.

Hi @hayunit,

Did you end up using the timber inside the post?

Adding the GateStop Metal Gate Alignment Device is also a great idea to prevent future issues.

I'm sure @LW2 is grateful to know that you've dealt with a similar situation and are happy with the result.

Thank you for sharing.

Re: How to fix broken latch on Colorbond gate?

No I did not, as it would have required to remove a number of screws, as the top part of the gate frame is secured, preventing me from sliding any timber down the post.

I added the gate stop, which has reduced the pressure on the gate striker latch.
