How to repair window?

IMG_1632.jpeg

How can I repair this window which is outside from the third bedroom. The glass on the top right is a different colour as the original was damaged and I couldn’t find the same colour. If anyone knows where I can source this please let me know

Re: How to match window glass?

Hello @Jspittle

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the coloured glass in your window.

The only idea that comes to mind is to artificially darken the glass by using Pillar 1.52 x 10m Graphite Tint Adhesive Window Film or to turn it frosty by using Pillar 0.9 x 2m Embossed Frost Adhesive Window Film to remove the focus on the different colour.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1@Noyade and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you have any other questions that we can help with, please let us know.

Good afternoon @Jspittle

I have been following this group in the great big blue "F" page  If you troll through the posts you should find suppliers along teh way that deal with stained glass.

Re: How to match window glass?

That isn’t the main issue. I want to know how to repair and repaint the window. The glass is a secondary factor which may not be able to be fixed

Re: How to match window glass?

Hi @Jspittle

My apologies for the miscommunication. If you wish to repaint the window frame, the general steps are to sand down the frame. I suggest investing in a detail sander such as the Ozito 200W Detail Sander. It comes with a set of pads which should be just enough to sand down your window frame. My best advice is to make sure that the sanding pad is properly secured to the tool before you start sanding the wood.

Once the frame has been totally sanded down, I suggest using a shop vac to remove all the sanding dust on the surface of the frame. Once the frame is clean and free of dust, I suggest masking the glass and brick surround to prevent overpainting. I recommend using Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat 1L to prime the surface and Dulux 1L Aquanamel Semi Gloss White Enamel Paint tinted in your preferred colour for the top coat. Please make sure to provide enough curing time between coats for best results.

Just a friendly reminder that working around glass can be dangerous an accidental hit with a tool or when too much force is applied can make the glass shatter and cause injury. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask.

Re: How to match window glass?

Hi @Jspittle,

Just be aware that any new glass you might buy to repair this could be of a different thickness, especially if the window is quite old.

My mate is a glazier by trade and him and I have had various arguments over glass thicknesses for a number of years.

Suffice to say, he wants 4mm thick glass in all of the windows, the older type imperial 3.5mm (3/32") is not structural glass and it will blow in

during strong winds.

Having said all this, there is glass dye that you can get, you just need to be careful with it around frames and what-not, if you're not comfortable using this, use the tinting sheets that @EricL was referring to.

My mate is vehement about the glass dye, but he is a glazier.

Should you need any further advice, by all means ask, this is what we are here for.

Cheers,

Mike T.

Re: How to match window glass?

Hi @Jspittle

I highly doubt you will find a matching tint to match the other glass. You would be far better to replace both if you're fussy about the colour match. In which case I would source from stained glass period renovation supplies both 2nd hand and new. Or period renovation supply retailers.

Then there is the excellent advice from @MikeTNZ has offered as another consideration.

Re: How to match window glass?

Hi @Nailbag,

I didn't know this until Pete told me about this and I've never seen it (or taken any notice).

Old glass goes from white clear to a shade of yellowing over years of UV exposure, new glass is immune to this because of the lack of lead they used to put in the glass, back in the day.

Also, new glass has a very thin coating of laminate plastic on both sides so that if it breaks, it doesn't send shards of glass everywhere.

Interesting @MikeTNZ I guess it's all part of why it's sometimes referred to as Safety Glass.

Re: How to match window glass?

Hi, thanks for the response. How do I fix the paint peeling off around the glass panes. The pane that was  replaced in a different colour was never installed correctly so it needs to be fixed
