M10 bolts or hex drive for timber uprights into stirrup?

I am building a leantoo and am concreting the stirrups into the ground. When I put the timber uprights into the stirrup it says to use a M10 bolt, but can I use a 100mm hex screw instead?

Re: M10 bolts or hex drive

Hi @Martinb,

Thank you for your question on hardware used with stirrups.

It is always best to use the recommended hardware dictated in a product's installation instructions as the relevant testing and engineering has been conducted with that specific hardware in mind.

A bolt and nut will pinch the stirrup around the post, utilising the strength of both uprights, whereas a hex screw will pull the timber towards one side of the stirrup creating an imbalance.

Is there a specific reason that you ask? Maybe a space issue?

Let me know, I'd love to help you find a solution that works.

Jacob

Re: M10 bolts or hex drive

Thanks Jacob, no I just have some left over hex drives and was just wondering if I could use them. But you answer is appreciated and will be used.
