Re: Outdoor kitchen

this is my outdoor kitchen built exclusively from bunnings products. the deck is the new finger jointed merbau they are now selling. the cabinets are all made from formply that's normally used for concreting. a fraction of the price than marine ply and with a coat of paint you wouldn't know the difference. the benchtop is just merbau boards glued and screwed from underneath the bench carcass. i framed between the posts with 70 x 45 treated pine to give the posts a slight reveal and covered in blue board ready for the 40 sheets of tiles that give it a more high end look i think. i painted a cheap second hand bar fridge with a rattle can, dropped in a sink, connected the tap and ran a powerpoint and lights to finish the job.

Re: Outdoor kitchen

Wow..this looks amazing. Do you have to weather the merbau before oiling it? I would like to try to put the decking together myself too:)

Re: Outdoor kitchen

Hi @earthynminimal,

Welcome to Workshop. We're pleased to have you join the community and look forward to seeing you complete your own decking project. Feel free to post anytime you need a hand with anything.

Most will advise waiting a month or two before you oil a deck for the first time. Here's what Cabots says - https://cabots.com.au/faqs/how-long-do-i-have-to-wait-to-coat

Re: Outdoor kitchen

this is as the timber came from bunnings. i was told it was pre oiled and when i first laid it, it had various blotchy spots where the oil had sat when they were stacked face to face. these marks have disappeared after two weeks. my plan is to leave it as is for a few months before washing it with some deck wash and then coating it with cabots aquadeck natural. hopefully this will get it to better match the older dech the new one is attached too.

Re: Outdoor kitchen

Hey Daryl,

What are we lining the cabinets with for heat proofing around the BBQ?
Looking at making a similar items at home and using the same BBQ you have.

Cheers

Re: Outdoor kitchen

@SteveT

i lined the bottom and sides where the bbq sits with cement sheeting like what you line walls with and tile over. you have to remember to allow for the thickness of the sheet when building the cabinets so the bbq can still drop in.
